AHRQ.gov is the website for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the research arm of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. AHRQ evaluates how people access health care, how much health care costs, and what happens to patients as a result of that care. AHRQ aims to identify the most effective way to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high-quality care; reduce medical errors; and improve patient safety.
AHRQ.gov’s page is divided into eight sections, starting with Clinical Information. This section includes scientific reviews, reports, and research on such topics as medical treatment findings, pharmaceuticals, immunizations, and tobacco use, just to name a few. Under the Funding Opportunities section, you will find requests for proposals, contracts, grant applications, and funding applications. Research Findings links to studies and results in fields such as mental health, long-term care, and methods. Specific Populations section acts as a directory of sorts pointing to research done on the different types of populations. Public Health Preparedness contains all information regarding bioterrorism planning and response. Consumers and Patients is a directory of information and advice on various maladies and health issues. Data and Surveys showcases the findings of AHRQ-funded projects. Finally, Quality and Patient Safety includes information on patients’ experiences, performance measures, and medical errors.
In addition to the eight main categories outlined above, AHRQ.gov has excellent tools and services, some of which are discussed in detail below.
Research Activities
Research Activities is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s online newsletter. Produced monthly, this newsletter announces projects and products, and summarizes research findings produced with the support of AHRQ. Every issue is available in HTML and PDF, for ease of printing. For those who wish to access older issues, an archive dating back to 1995 is available.
Knowledge Library
The Knowledge Library, located under the Quality and Patient Safety section, contains over 6,000 resources of information in such areas as technology, laws and standards, organizational strategy, and operations. The content in this library is divided into two categories: core collection (content deemed “exceptional quality” by AHRQ experts and central to the health IT discipline) and partner contributions (content provided by professional societies and non-profit organizations experienced in IT).
Spotlight
Featured on the right-hand side of the home page is the “Spotlight” section. This section features the headlines of the three newest reports that are authored by AHRQ’s experts or funded by the agency. The headlines serve as links to the entire articles. Below the Spotlight section is the link to the “Newsroom” where the “Spotlight” articles are located, along with an extensive archive of past articles. Archives date back to 1995.
