Some health care providers in America are extremely large, covering as many as 50 states with tens of millions of members. Vista Healthplans is not one of these. Based in and covering the state of Florida, Vista membership numbers hover at approximately 300,000 people who are served by 5,000 participating doctors and hospitals in South Florida, and another 1,500 in North Florida.
Vista started in 2003 with the merger of two health care companies: Beacon Health Plans and Healthplan Southeast. These were two smaller health care providers that served different areas in Florida. The merger effectively allowed them to offer greater coverage, eventually spanning the entire state. After the merger, Vista headquarters was established in Hollywood, Florida. Currently, the company takes in over a billion dollars per year in revenue. Its vision statement states that, "Vista will be the health benefits company of choice, providing the value and service we want for our own families."
Vista was bestowed an award from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). This is a voluntary accreditation through an independent organization that takes into account factors such as Rights of Patients, Governance, Clinical Records, and Facilities. Vista received three years of accreditation, the longest term granted.
