Founded in 1934, Medical Mutual of Ohio is one of the oldest health care companies in America. Rather than focusing on expansion across the nation, Medical Mutual focuses its efforts inside the state of Ohio. With 2,500 employees based in Cleveland, Medical Mutual of Ohio serves 1.5 million members-about one of every 10 people who live in Ohio. The company offers a full array of services, including:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
  • Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Vision and Dental plans.

Although its coverage area is small, Medical Mutual has been awarded multiple awards for quality. Its PPO programs were the first to receive full accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a non-profit organization that reviews health care. Its HMOs were also well-reviewed, receiving "Excellent," the highest mark possible from the NCQA. In short, all of Medical Mutual's managed-care programs are accredited at NCQA's highest level.

Medical Mutual Plans

With the multitude of plans offered, exact benefits and premiums will differ greatly. Monthly premiums also vary by age, location, tobacco use, and other socio-economic factors. The following plans are priced for a non-smoking male of age 30:

  • SuperMed One 5000 - This PPO plan has a $5,000 deductible, but after the deductible has been met, covers 100 percent of most in-network office visits, including urgent care. Out-of-network coverage is 50 percent after the deductible has been met. A 30-day supply of medications is $15 for generic, $30 for medications on the formulary list, and $45 for non-formulary.

  • SuperMed One HSA 1200 - This is an HSA account with a $5000 deductible. HSAs work like IRAs in that they offer a tax-free account that pays for medical expenses. After the deductible has been met, most in-network office visits are covered 80 percent and out-of-network coverage is 50 percent. Medications, after the deductible has been met, are also covered at 80 percent for in-network care and 50 percent for out-of-network care.

  • Short Term SuperMed One 500 - This short term plan provides coverage for one calendar year, from the first of January to the thirty-first of December. The plan has a $500 deductible and $15 copayments for office visits and urgent care. After the deductible has been met, most routine services are covered at 50 percent, while surgery and other services are covered 80 percent for in-network and 60 percent for out-of-network care. Most medications are covered at 80 percent after the deductible has been met.

Dental and vision coverage can be added onto any plan. Insurance for critical illness is also an option.
